Bali Unveils Ambitious Plan to Revamp Pedestrian Safety and Walkability Across Its Most Popular Resort Areas

Bali, renowned for its lush landscapes and vibrant tourism scene, is taking steps to improve the walkability of its most visited areas. While some regions, such as Sanur and Nusa Dua, are already pedestrian-friendly, many of Bali’s busiest resorts, including Uluwatu and Canggu, are notorious for their hazardous walkways. However, significant changes are underway that will make navigating these areas safer and more accessible for both locals and tourists.

Authorities in Bali’s Badung Regency, which includes popular tourism destinations like Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak, have announced a plan to overhaul the region’s sidewalk infrastructure. With funding allocated in the 2026 Regency Budget, the project aims to address the damaged sidewalks that have long posed safety risks and to create new walkways to enhance mobility. The initiative focuses on improving public safety and providing an easier and more enjoyable experience for visitors exploring Bali’s top resorts.

Detailed assessments have already been conducted in key areas to identify the worst-affected sidewalks. One of the key zones set for improvement is the famous Samigita Beach area, stretching from Kuta Beach to Legian and Seminyak. This stretch is frequently visited by tourists, yet its sidewalks have deteriorated significantly, leading to numerous safety concerns. Many visitors have suffered falls due to the uneven surfaces, a situation the government is working to rectify with this upcoming repair project. Authorities have stressed that these renovations are crucial to preserving the comfort and security of both visitors and locals.

The planned upgrades will not only improve pedestrian safety but also enhance the overall look and feel of Bali’s tourism hotspots. By making the walkways safer and more aesthetically appealing, the government aims to ensure that visitors can enjoy the island’s beauty without concern. This initiative is part of a broader effort to maintain Bali’s status as a leading global tourist destination. With the island ranking as the World’s Second-Best Destination, authorities recognize that ongoing infrastructure improvements are essential to keep Bali competitive in the international tourism market.

One of the most notable projects is the widening of the sidewalks along Jalan Raya Kuta, one of Bali’s busiest roads, which runs between iconic landmarks such as the Hard Rock Café and Pullman Hotel. Currently, the narrow pavements in this area often make it difficult for pedestrians to move around, particularly during peak hours when the streets are crowded with tourists. For families with strollers or young children, navigating the area can be a particular challenge. The sidewalk widening project is expected to provide more space and improve pedestrian flow, ensuring that tourists and locals can move around the area safely and comfortably.

These repairs are not limited to Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak. Ubud, Bali’s cultural heart, has also seen similar infrastructure issues. Earlier this year, tourists were cautioned to tread carefully along Jalan Raya Kedewatan after part of the sidewalk collapsed. In response, authorities quickly took action to block off the damaged section and repair it. Ubud has long struggled with the condition of its sidewalks, and this issue has become a topic of humor among locals and visitors alike. One local tour company even posted a lighthearted reminder on social media urging tourists to wear sturdy shoes while exploring Ubud, joking that walking on the area’s sidewalks could be considered an Olympic sport.

While these comments were made in jest, they highlight the need for continued improvements in pedestrian infrastructure across the island. Tourists walking through Bali need to remain alert to avoid accidents, and the government’s repair plans are an essential step toward making the island’s busiest tourist destinations more accessible and enjoyable for visitors.

These efforts to improve Bali’s walkability are part of a broader strategy to ensure that the island remains a premier travel destination. By addressing issues such as crumbling sidewalks, narrow pavements, and accessibility challenges, the local government is working to make Bali a safer, more welcoming place for both residents and tourists. The project will also enhance the overall tourism experience, allowing visitors to explore Bali’s cultural and natural beauty with greater ease and comfort.

With these upcoming improvements, tourists can expect safer, more pleasant walks through Bali’s most popular resort areas. As the island continues to strengthen its infrastructure, it will not only improve the day-to-day experience for visitors but also solidify its position as a top-tier global destination. The changes will help ensure that Bali remains a favorite travel spot for tourists worldwide, offering a seamless and enjoyable experience for all who visit.
