Our school consistently achieves above average results in many subjects and competitions while providing a number of support programs for students with special needs. One such program is our Hearing Support Unit in which specialist teachers teach students from year 7 - 12 in specialist classrooms while also supporting students in mainstream classes. The school operates an effective and supportive program for our Gifted and Talented Students. Our excellent results in public examinations over the years have won the school great respect in the region. Our reputation for delivering excellence is unchallenged. Over 50% of our Year 12 students receive first round offers to university every year. While the school was established in 1968, it has changed a great deal over the years. A number of additional buildings have been added, the Library has been extended and multi-purpose centre opened in 1997. Kotara High is flanked by 3 hectares of bushland that makes up part of the school grounds. Since 2000 there have been significant improvements made to the bushland as a result of various grants and a very effective Green Corps project. We endeavour to celebrate each other’s uniqueness by providing opportunity for all and to develop a culture that identifies that the journey towards excellence is often paved with trial and error, risk taking, learning from mistakes, flexibility and adaptability. We believe that encouraging students to take ownership of the learning is critical in achieving the best learning outcomes and that implicit in this concept is that students learn their own areas of strength and areas of development, through useful and explicit feedback.
